Content delivery network CDNetworks (www.cdnetworks.com) has announced that Aeria Games (www.aeriagames.com), one of the world's fastest growing free-to-play online gaming publishers, has extended its agreement with CDNetworks, more than doubling its traffic commitment.

According to its Friday announcement, CDNetworks is providing Aeria Games added infrastructure for rapid client and patch downloads, providing end users with exceptional online experiences and Aeria Games significant cost savings. CDNetworks provides Aeria Games seamless scalability in both network capacity and geographic reach, supporting growth in the US and European markets.

"Success in the free-to-play online gaming sector is all about the quality of each end user's encounter with the game and the publishing website," Aeria Games chief technology officer Terry Ngo said in a statement. "We trust CDNetworks for reliable and trouble free customer service. This allows us to focus on the players' activities, and the expansion of our portfolio and geographic reach, without worrying about the details of the infrastructure and content delivery cost control."

Aeria Games, known for the variety and quality of its games, has grown from 4 million users to more than 7 million in 2009 in the past year. It will be launching Hello Kitty Online later this year.

Aeria Games is among many regional software publishers that have chosen CDNetworks' global CDN to bring their products online. In March, Gamepot (www.gamepot.co.jp) expanded into the US using CDNetworks' game client and patch download services, as well as global data center services for hosting its games, which include several popular Asian games. In June, European online distributor of software and video games, Nexway (www.nexway.com), expanded the scope of its content delivery beyond Europe to the entire world using CDNetworks' services.

Host Spider - Baronyx to Build Wind-Powered Data Center

Data center operator Baronyx (www.baronyx.com) announced on Friday it plans to build a 28,000-square-foot data center in Stratford, Texas that will be powered by wind turbines.

Last month, the company won three land lease bids from the State of Texas to construct wind farm-powered data centers, as well as other forms of energy that operate with zero carbon dioxide emissions.

The wind turbines will be comprised of two offshore turbines of more than 19,000 acres each, and 8,000 acres of onshore turbines.

The company says that the data center will be initially be powered by 150 onshore wind turbines near the data center, located in the Texas panhandle. Each turbine will be able to produce 3.3 to 6MW of power.

Over time, the data center will add more machines, which will require more power. The company will then add 450 additional offshore turbines in the Gulf of Mexico to generate significantly more power.

When these farms are fully functional, Baryonyx will supply power to the Texas General Land Office, and in turn, they will sell the electricity to cities, schools, and prisons.

These profits will be allocated to the Texas Permanent School Fund, a state-run organization that funds public schools through a means other than taxes.

Baryonyx is an start-up company that specializes to innovative energy solutions, primarily in wind power.

ndia-based global IT giant Tata Communications (www.tatacommunications.com) has opened a 6,000-square-foot Eastern India data center located in Kolkata (formerly known as Calcutta), making it the first commercially available tier III data center of its kind in the region.

According to its Monday announcement, Tata's new data center is connected to its Tier I India network and is in the same facility as Tata's core network infrastructure backbone, giving customers low-latency and reliable connectivity options throughout India and the world.

"The eastern India market is a relatively untapped market and we hope to act as an enabler for attractive investment opportunities in this region through our services," Tata global managed solutions data center services vice president Abid Qadiri said in a statement. "Now customers will no longer need to invest in setting up captive data centers or locate it outside the region. We offer them the same stringent SLAs and quality assurance which they have come to expect from us."

The facility is also built to Telecommunications Industry Association 942 standards, which specify a generic telecommunications cabling system for data centers and related IT facilities.

The new data center is part of a $2 billion investment plan over the next three years. With nearly 1 million square feet of data center space worldwide, and Indian facilities in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Pune, Tata is the largest and widest service provider in India.

Its recent activities outside India include it becoming an anchor tenant customer of Africa's $650 million deep water cable system, SEACOM (www.seacom.mu), which opened two weeks ago. As an anchor tenant on the 9,320-mile, undersea cable system, Tata Communications is able to provide fully integrated network services from South Africa, Mozambique, Tanzania and Kenya to its networks in Europe, Asia and India.
